“Sonny” Perkins (Bernard Hoyt Perkins Jr.) passed away in his home in Portland, Maine on September 3rd, 2025. His passing was unexpected but peaceful. He leaves behind his daughters—Chanda, Tiffany, and Meghan—and is survived by his brother William (Bill) and sisters Kathryne and Kelly. He was preceded in death by his sister Sarah Perkins, brother Robert (Bobby) Perkins, and his mother and father Ruth and Buddy Perkins.
Born on February 12th, 1947, to Ruth Lambert Allen and Bernard Hoyt Perkins Sr., Sonny grew up in Penobscot, which always remained his most beloved place on Earth, even after a life of extensive world travel. Sonny served in the U.S. Navy and went on to work as a merchant marine Captain. He had a lifelong love of the sea, of music, and of the woods and shores of Maine. He was a master of storytelling, and nautical knots. Sonny will be remembered for his strength and kindness.
Services will be held privately amongst family.
