He was born on April 13, 1943 in Portland, the middle son to the late Leonard and Loraine Savage of Westbrook. He graduated from Deering High School in 1962. During his high school years he played in the school band, and dabbled with football and track. After High school Dennis (or Denny known to his friends), worked various jobs throughout the Portland area until he began working at Sebago Shoe Inc., where he met his future wife, Jayne Leighton Pride/Savage of Windham.
Dennis began working for the Weyerhaeuser Paper Co. located in Westbrook where he stayed for the next 30 years. The two moved into the close knit community near Riverbank Park on Giles Street in Westbrook. Dennis and Jayne raised three children in this memorable community, and on many occasions opened their doors to foster children in need of their help and support during difficult times. Dennis was a self- proclaimed jack of all trades. He dove into many hobbies such Ham Radios, photography, building electronic Hi-Fi equipment, and some wood working/carving. He never stopped feeding his mind with knowledge and was a prolific reader. Sometimes he would take a book from start to finish all in the same day. He had an uncanny ability to recall the important facts and figures on many of the thousands of books that he had read over the years.
Summer time was spent traveling throughout this great state of Maine camping at any and every state park that had an opening. Abol Campground in Baxter State Park was one of his favorite places. This peaceful place came to be an annual vacation for his family along with many families of the Giles Street Community. On his own time he would enjoy bowling, playing pool (to some considered to be a pool shark), playing or managing company softball teams, playing cribbage, doing crossword puzzles in amazing time, fishing, and spending time with his relatives and family members. Dennis provided a fountain of off color or dry humor that would be sure to get a chuckle or belly laugh from those around him. He enjoyed making others laugh even if it was at his own expense. As a committed family man, he could often be seen following his children around to sporting events or activities. He was the type of guy that would drop to the floor to play with his nieces, nephews and grandchildren even up to his later years. Dennis and Jayne were often seen out for a coffee or a bite out to eat at the local dinners throughout Westbrook and Portland. You would call him chatty if you over heard him at the local dinner and he would offer his opinion on any topic thrown on the table.
He was preceded by his parents Leonard and Loraine Savage of Westbrook, and his wife Jayne Leighton Savage of Westbrook and a younger brother Mark Savage of Westbrook. He is survived by his brother Lynn Savage and wife Phyllis of Gorham, ME, daughter Melissa Marshall and husband Rick of Jacksonville, N.C. Grandson Richie Marshall and Wife Halie and great granddaughter Aubree of Jacksonville, NC. . His son Tim Savage of Westbrook ME, who he was exceptionally close with and his second son Dan Savage, wife Gail, and grandchildren Benjamin and Paige of Standish, ME. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews of his brother, Lynn Savage of Gray, Andrea Winship of Windham, Laura Savage, Dawn Savage and Mary Savage all from Westbrook; who will greatly miss their Uncle Dennis. There are many others worthy of mention that have helped in supporting family during this difficult year.
A life celebration will be schedule for March 13, 2014 from 4:00 -8:00pm at the American Legion Hall located at 300 Conant Street in Westbrook. All are welcome to join the family by sharing a story, a photo, or just stopping in to pay respects to a wonderful man.
A burial will be schedule later this spring in his final resting place next to his wife in Brooklawn Cemetery in South Portland. Thanks to all the care givers at PCAL and the Barron Center that watched over Dennis during his time of need over the past year.
