She was born in Wells, on Aug. 29, 1935 to Kenneth L. Harriman and Eleanor M. Simmons of Kennebunk, Maine. After Polly’s mother died when Polly was only 6 months old, she went to live with her grandmother, Harriman in Haverhill, Mass. After her grandmother’s death, Polly returned to Kennebunk to live with her grandmother Simmons and graduated from Kennebunk High School. On May 26, 1956 she married the love of her life, Johann (John, Hans) Wilhelm Ziegler and was married for 53 years until his death in 2009. She lived happily at her home in Arundel, working at Kesslen Shoe, Herman Shoe and Downeast Energy, retiring in 1998. Polly travelled to Germany to visit her husband’s homestead several times.
Polly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cookouts at the Lake, and sitting by the woodstove making miniatures and various other crafts. She loved to cook and work in her garden with her little dog, Abby by her side.
Polly was a compassionate, understanding, and dignified person. Whenever there was someone in need, she was there with a helping hand and a cheerful smile. She was always quick to support and never was one to judge others. Through good times and bad times, she always had a positive, and “can do” attitude.
Polly was predeceased by her husband, Johann (John, Hans) Wilhelm Ziegler and brother, Kenneth Harriman. She is survived by her Sister, Caroline (Carrie) Pierce of Biddeford, Sister in law, Emma Shute of Sebago, Brother in law, Hannes Ziegler of Germany, and many nieces and nephews; Carol Harriman, Cindy Harriman, Heidi Montagne, Shirley Winship, Elke Lombard, Brigitte Ziegler, Ingrid Garcia, Joseph Marquis, Robert Toussaint, Eric Shute, Michael Shute, Jonathan Shute, Uwe Schoder, Homer Schoder, Stephen Harriman and Robert Harriman.
A celebration of Polly’s life will be held in the spring.
