I learned of Jan's death today after listening to a voice mail he left that was overlooked.  My thoughts go out to his family.  
Farewell my soul friend, your are known, you are seen, and you are recognized.

Dear Jānis..Someone once said that death is not the greatest loss in life . The greatest loss is what dies  inside of us while we still alive..I always keep you in my greatest memories . You opened me the world which I didn’t know existed. I will always be  grateful for everything you done for me and my family, your jokes , your kindness. We met Janis , Carol and Lia on1988, in Riga, Latvia. He was the person who introduced our lives radically, because we came from Latvia, that time occupied by Soviet Union.Jānis opened our eyes to the free world and showed to us that the parallel reality existed in the Earth.He offered bunch of good reading and personal communication which educated our minds greatly and opened new horizons. Thank you our darling friend. 

My deepest condolences to Jan's children, Jesse, Josh and Max and Jan's family. Jan had many friends and acquaintances throughout his life and I was honored to be one of them. I met Jan in 2005 and we stayed in touch off and on over these past 18 years. What I remember most was how he loved his children. They were all he talked about when he lived in Rangeley as they were growing up. He loved talking about them, talking about the time he spent with them, what they would do together and the places they would go together.  And while I never met them personally, I felt as if I knew them.  Our imperfect lives can lead us down pathways to an end unexpected. None of us know how much time we have here on this earth. Jan's life was a mixture of perfect imperfection and beauty. He had a brilliant mind and many talents. He had a beautiful heart and  those he loved, he loved deeply.  That is how I will remember this man. 

My thoughts and prayers to the family.  I and my siblings (Ed and Anita) spent time with Jānīt and Lia at their grandparents home In Lancaster PA 
Everyone loved Herta Puzulis and the entire Puzulis and Semba family. 

 I know Jānīt was celebrating St John’s day!  Herta made Jāņu Siers (St Johns Day cheese), which was fabulous.

I have wonderful memories of Jan - he took me dancing in New York for the first time aged 16 and to Foyles in London as a moody teenager, where he bought me all his favourite books so that I could share his love of reading and his most loved American authors.  He will always be in my thoughts and I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. 

Jan and I shared a love for soccer. I have fond memories of going to a World  Cup match with him in Foxboro with Lia and Carol. The soccer games after camp in the Catskills were the best.  And playing three-on-three in the back yard in Rangeley with our kids still stands out. He left me with many vivid images of his training regiment and  international play in Latvia.  But what stands out most is the twinkle in Omite's eyes when she saw her 'Janit'
