John Edward Dall passed away in his home, at age 63, on Monday, February 11th, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones. John, who went by ‘Jed’, as he stated that only strangers called him John, was born on December 1st 1958 in Brunswick, Maine to his parents Ruth I. Dyer and Rolland E. Dall, both deceased.
John took on many roles in his life, from husband, to father, uncle, son, brother, and grampy. He was a proud man who worked incredibly hard to provide for his family. He was married in 1984 to Cathy Lynn Racine. John and Cathy were expecting their first born later that year. John and Cathy welcomed three children into this world. The two separated in 92, and both remained present and involved in the lives of their children.
As a young man, John enjoyed playing in a band with his childhood bestfriends the Prindall brothers, Jon Boy, and Larry Roy. For many years in the 90’s he also played darts on a team, competing and taking dozens of trophies home. John spent a lot of time jamming out on his acoustic guitar, spending early fall and winter mornings with his son, brother and nephews in the woods, rifle and bow hunting, and spending summer nights at the local fairs, with his 3 children.
John dropped out of high school, and joined the US Army in the 70’s where he was Honorably Discharged in Dec. 1983. He spent the majority of his employment years at Pine State Safety Lines, where he worked for approximately 22 years as a line striper, before the company closed. John spent the rest of his time working as a cook, mostly at the Miss Brunswick Diner, with a short employment time at the Copper Kettle. John became well known and loved by the customers and patrons he cooked for.
John was just beginning to live and enjoy life in early retirement years when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He had three adult children, Jessica Dall from Brunswick, age 38, Jedadia Dall from Randolph, age 36 and Shanna Schaab from Washington ME, age 33, John also had nine grandchildren. John spent his free time with his grandkids, teaching them skills like swimming in his large above ground pool, kitchen safety and cooking, a little bit of driving, and always hosting ‘sleepovers at gramps’ giving them memories to last a lifetime. He could fix anything that was broken, in the eyes of his daughters, portrayed what the role of a father should be, and his children have always been incredibly thankful and proud of him, for everything he did and overcame throughout his life.
John was a quiet, steadfast and humble man. He was never one for fancy speeches, or big words. He expressed his love for his children and grandchildren with the language of music. John wrote, played and sang songs, for those he loved - and for enjoyment. His laugh was as loud as thunder, and as cheerful as a songbird. His hands were calloused from hard work, and stained from dirt, his soul - was, and will always be one of the safest, kindest, strongest and most forgiving, left in the hearts, minds and memories of so many people impacted by John’s short time on this planet.
John Dall is survived by his 3 children, Jessica Ann Marie Dall, Jedadia Allen Dall, and Shanna Rose Schaab and his 9 grandchildren, Shilee & Shamus Thompson, Adia Dall,, ages 15, Alexisis Reil age 10, Finn and Annabelle Brewer ages 8 and 6, Lilian and Delilah Curtis ages 4 and Maci Schaab age 1. John is also survived by his brother and sister-in law Gary and Shirly Dall, his nephews, Chuck and Gary Dall, 3 half siblings, Roland Dall, Lorrie Dall and Tim Dall, as well as many step-siblings, cousins including Donnette Goodenow from Harpswell, and many more friends and distant relatives, near and far.
