Mary was born September 4, 1952 to Margaret Banks (McCrum) Hebert and Albert Joseph Hebert, Sr of Mars Hill, ME.
Born and raised in Mars Hill, ME, Mary attended Central Aroostook High School where she graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1970. Mary went on to attend the University of Maine in Orono and the University of Southern Maine, earning a bachelor's degree in Nursing. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Gary.
Mary and Gary were wed on February 15, 1975 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mars Hill; they had just recently celebrated 50 beautiful years together. Mary and Gary lived and worked briefly in Presque Isle before moving to North Carolina where Gary attended school and Mary worked at Duke University Medical Center, where she gained her first experience in Critical Care Nursing. The two of them spent wonderful years there meeting several life-long friends and developing their professional skills. Shortly after the birth of their first child they moved back to Maine where they raised their two daughters in South Portland and Scarborough.
The bulk of Mary’s long nursing career was spent as a Registered Nurse at Maine Medical Center before moving to Florida where she continued nursing at the Cleveland Clinic in Naples. She moved back to Maine to be closer to her children and grandchildren in 2012 and retired from Maine Medical Center in 2014.
Mary and her cherished husband enjoyed traveling in Europe and spending time with their grandchildren, relatives and friends all over the United States. Mary loved college basketball, especially Duke, crossword puzzles, her friends, family, and most especially her beloved 5 grandchildren.
Remaining to cherish Mary’s memory are her loving husband, Gary; her two daughters, Alison Fongemie and her husband Jacob Fongemie of Tenants Harbor, ME; Jessica Prohn and her husband Douglas Prohn of North Grafton, MA; 5 grandchildren, Jacob and Ethan Prohn, Elias, Oliver, and Opal Fongemie; 2 brothers Athill Banks Hebert and his partner Sandy Huck of Caribou, ME, and Dr. A. Joseph Hebert, Jr. and his wife Pamela Hebert of Joe’s Pond, VT; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Mary will also be sorely missed by her many beloved friends, especially Pia and Steven Seddon and their family.
A private celebration of life will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (https://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org/) or Beacon Hospice Care of South Portland (https://locations.amedisys.com/me/south-portland/52-atlantic-place-beacon-hospice-care-an-amedisys-company).
