Mary was born in Portland, ME on April 4, 1913, the only child of John L. & Florence (Bolton) Grendell. She grew up on the family farm in Gorham, however stayed with family in Portland during the school year while attending the Waynflete School and Deering High School, which she graduated from in 1931.
Following High School she attended the Portland School of Art, were she earned a degree and then went to work for L.C. Andrew Co. as Mr. Andrew’s Personal Assistant.
On February 22, 1956 she married Ernest A. Wyman and celebrated 50 years of marriage before his passing. Shortly after they were married, Ernest built what would become their family home for those 50 years, a house designed by Mary. She and her husband operated a hand weaving and craft business out of the home. They were members of the United Maine Craftsmen and were vendors at craft fairs for many years.
Mary enjoyed creating rock gardens and derived great pleasure from her animals, having had pets from parakeets to a skunk as well as many dogs and cats. She was a talented artist, and the author and illustrator of 3 unpublished children’s books. She once painted a mural of a fireplace on the wall of L.C. Andrew’s office, and was delighted when someone walked by and tried to throw trash in the fireplace thinking it was real! Mary will be remembered as someone who always did the right thing, no matter how it affected her. She never spoke ill of anyone and found positives in almost every situation. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a gentle demeanor throughout her life.
