Nick was born on January 30th, 1939 to Lydia and Francis Seitz in Topeka, Kansas. He and his family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, where he met his wife Velma Jean Pfannenstiel. They were married on September 10th, 1959 in Wichita. Nick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1966, and moved to
Connecticut in 1967 where he embarked on a 40 year career in sports journalism with Golf Digest. His career included authoring several books, and garnered many awards and accolades. Nick retired from Golf Digest in 1999, but continued to travel and write about the sport he loved for many years.
Nick was passionate about the game and the players of golf, though he never perfected his own swing. He amassed great collections of books, music, and art. He was a snappy dresser, favoring crisp polos, sweater vests and jaunty hats. Every blazer had a notebook and pen in the pocket, lest any idea be lost. He was a connoisseur of good food, with favorites including steak at The Palm, Legal Seafood, and Bryant’s BBQ (best when dripping down his shirt). His favorite days were capped off with a bottle of Barolo and a good cigar. In retirement he strove to remain active and well-read, though Parkinson’s Disease eventually robbed him of those pleasures. He and Velma moved to Maine in 2015.
Nick was predeceased by Velma (in October, 2021) and his brother Francis (FJ). He is survived by his son Bradley, his wife Heidi and their three children Brian (married to Kirsten Beaudry), Luke and Margaret; his son Gregory and his three children Nicholas, Emma and Isabela; and several nephews and nieces.
A private service is planned in June. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the
Bruce Edwards Foundation (http://www.bruceedwardsfoundation.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to ALS research, about which Nick was passionate.
