He was born in Lawrence, NY to Gus and Vita Feldman on September 15, 1941. He attended Lawrence High School and The Peddie School and graduated from Lafayette College. The funeral was held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery and officiated by Rabbi Lucy Dinner.
Alan began his business career working for his father in the garment industry. He started his career in finance in 1979. He was a successful financial consultant at Shearson, Citi Group, and UBS, retiring as Senior Vice President in 2018.
Alan made friends easily and could have a conversation with anybody. His friends, his clients, and his colleagues all trusted him— he had a sweetness and sense of ethics that he brought to every situation, along with joy and humor.
He was the consummate family man. He enjoyed nothing more than playing with his kids, and later, his grandkids. He was like a grandfather to the children of his friends, too, who called him “Mr.Silly Face.”
A walk-on varsity basketball player in college, Alan was an all-around athlete his entire life. He was a beloved soccer coach to his sons and their friends and loved playing golf and tennis with his family and friends. He served as president of Middle Bay Country Club and the Seawane Club and was the only member in the history of Middle Bay to win the golf championship in three different decades. He shined as a two-sport athlete, winning the tennis and golf championships the same year.
He was philanthropic to his core and was remarkably dedicated to the Jack Martin Fund (JMF), founded by his family in honor of his uncle. JMF’s partnership with Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City began in 1950. Although the fund was originally focused on finding treatments for polio, it shifted to Mt. Sinai’s pioneering program in adolescent psychiatry and then to research and education programs in virtually every area of medicine and surgery. Alan’s leadership helped JMF raise over $45 million during its 74 year history. He ran all operations out of his office. There were no paid employees and every dollar raised went (and still goes) directly to Mt. Sinai. He and a group of dedicated colleagues and friends played a pivotal role in creating the JMF division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
Alan is survived by his wife, Judith; his sons, Evan and Gabriel (Abby Gaunt); his grandchildren, Mack, Maisie, and Mary Delaney; and his sister and brother, Sandi Dorn and Jack Feldman (Matthew Liss); as well as beloved nieces, cousins, friends, and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents, Gus and Vita Feldman.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Jack Martin Fund, the National Fragile X Foundation, or a charity of your choice. May his memory always be a blessing.
A graveside service for Alan will be held Monday, January 22, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N State St, Raleigh, NC 27601.
