Andrew Kenneth Matrone (Andy), 54, of Raleigh, passed away unexpectedly on July 6, 2025, at UNC Rex Hospital. Andy was an Adult Nurse Practitioner and owner of Matrone Primary Care. He provided medical care for residents in adult care homes.
Andy graduated from Athens High School in Raleigh. He earned a B.S. in civil engineering at North Carolina State University and began his career as a structural engineer.
Surviving Hodgkin's lymphoma in his late thirties changed the trajectory and purpose of his life. While still working as an engineer, he enrolled in Watts School of Nursing, where he earned a B.S. in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. He then earned a M.S. in Nursing with honors at Duke University. For the last twelve years of his life, he devoted his considerable talent and energy to improving the health and lives of his patients, even as managing his own health became increasingly difficult.
Andy’s passions included helping build and then maintaining and improving his family home; fixing cars, trucks and tractors; building beautiful, Craftsman-style furniture; listening to heavy metal and (some) classical music; and cooking turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He loved his cats, Angelo and Gina, and their predecessors.
Andy was predeceased by his wife, Amy Maynor Matrone, and his father, Kenneth Wager Matrone. He is survived by his significant other, Dara Lockamy; his mother, Ann Matrone, and step-father, Alan Seiferheld; his paternal aunt, Margaret Matrone; his maternal aunt, Mary Ellen Bailey; his sister, Kelly Matrone Burleson (Brooks); niece, Holly Burleson; step-sisters, Sheri Seiferheld (Ned Nedwidek}, and Wendy Seiferheld; and her daughter, Esther Seiferheld.
A Celebration of Andy’s life will take place Monday, July 14, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 Millbrook Road, Raleigh, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am, and the service at 12:00 noon. The Rev. M. David Chambers will officiate. Scattering of ashes will be private at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends who wish to do so make a donation their favorite charity.
