Atlas Dwane Johnson

Dwane was born on April 25, 1927 in Johnston County to the late Edgar and Irene Poole Johnson. In 1953 he married Gennie Holder, and they moved to Raleigh. Dwane worked for the News and Observer from 1955 until he retired in 1994. He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 60 years. In 2012 Dwane's wife, Gennie, died after 58 years of marriage. In 2014 Dwane was blessed to find love again and marry Wanda Scott. They were married for eight years.

Dwane loved working in his yard and grew beautiful tomatoes. After he retired, he assisted on many occasions with the maintenance of his church. He also assisted with many Wednesday night church suppers. Dwane especially enjoyed the trips with his family to Sunset Beach.

Dwane was preceded in death by his first wife, Gennie, in 2012 and by a daughter, Beth Johnson Nurnberger, in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his daughter Sara Johnson Winters and husband Jeff of Durham; his son-in-law, Walt Nurnberger of Cornelius; Wanda's children, Teresa Hegler and husband Julian and Steve Scott and wife Melissa, all of Raleigh. In addition, Dwane is survived by his grandchildren, Maygen Nurnberger Logan and husband Marc; Kelsey Nurnberger Slate and husband Weston; Hannah Nurnberger Weinstock and husband KG; Walter Nurnberger; Stephen, Brian and David Winters; and Wanda's grandchildren, Colling Scott and wife Katherine Barefoot; Ashley Lowen and husband Rocky; and Colby, Henry and Logan Hegler. Dwane is survived by six great-grandchildren.

A visitation for Dwane will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 9:30 AM at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Road, Raleigh, NC 27608. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM. A graveside service will follow at Montlawn Cemetery, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC 27603.
