

Benjamin Harvey White, 98, of Magnolia Glen Retirement Community, Raleigh, died April 4, 2011. He was born at Aulander, N.C. on December 10, 1912. He received a B.S. Degree from Wake Forest College in 1938. Upon graduation, he taught school in Franklin County, N.C. for three years. He then worked for the Farm Security Administration from 1941 to 1947, serving as County Supervisor in Warren, Stokes, Davidson, and Forsyth Counties. From 1947 to 1955, he worked for the Albers Milling Company, a subsidiary of the Carnation Company. From 1955 to1961, he worked as the County Supervisor in Pitt County for the Farmers Home Administration (FHA). He then served as a Real Estate Loan Officer in the FHA State Office in Raleigh. In1963, he was promoted to the FHA national office in Washington, DC, where he served until1972 in the Association Loan Division with responsibility for making loans and grants to rural non-profit corporations and/or public bodies for water and sewer systems. From 1972 until his retirement in 1973, he served as the Director, Resource Management Association Division, FHA with responsibility for seven different loan programs dealing with non-profit cooperatives and/or public bodies. Also during his tenure of employment with the FHA national office, he served on numerous task forces and committees involving various aspects of life in rural America. He received two Superior Service Awards and in 1972 was awarded a _ Certificate for Outstanding Accomplishment. Upon retirement in 1973, he moved back to Raleigh where he has lived until his death. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Raleigh and of the Everette Miller Bible Class.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ricks White, and two brothers, Wingate White and Vernon White; and two sisters, Elizabeth Bazemore and Ophelia Miles. Surviving are his son, Benjamin H. White, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Raleigh, his son, William H. White of Emerald Isle; four grandchildren, Brian David White of Raleigh, Kathryn Claire White of Savannah, Georgia, Angela White Griffin of Apex, and Benjamin H. White, III, of Winston-Salem; and three great grandchildren, Gracie Eleanor Griffin, Davis Koebig Griffin, and Emery Joseph White.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army and/or Hospice of Wake County. There will be a graveside service for the family at 1:30 pm, Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Aulander Town Cemetery, Aulander, NC. The family especially wants to thank the care givers at Magnolia Glen and Hospice of Wake County for the outstanding care they rendered to Ben before his death.
