

Evelyn Klemstine was born a U.S. citizen in Hamburg, Germany. During her childhood, she moved in between Alexandria Virginia, Moscow, and Taiwan while her parents served at the U.S. embassies. After Taiwan, Evelyn’s family moved back to Alexandria, Virginia where she attended T.C. Williams High School. In 1979, she went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Tech and her Masters of Business Administration from Boston University in 1996.
Evelyn started her government auditing career with the Army Audit Agency which allowed her to move back to Germany and travel the world. She later joined the DoD Office of Inspector General, Office of Audit. From 1994 to 2004, Evelyn served as Program Director in the International Programs Division where she took on complex and politically sensitive international issues. Her work on the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program (dismantlement of nuclear and chemical weapons in the former Soviet Union) earned her the highest DoD civilian service award, the DoD Distinguished Service Award from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
From 2004 until 2009, Evelyn Klemstine became the Assistant Inspector General for Auditing at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) where she was responsible for a broad range of program audits. After leaving NASA, Evelyn served as the Assistant Inspector General of the Department of State where she continued to direct audits and evaluations of the Department of State. Evelyn retired with 34 years of government civil service in August 2013.
After retirement, Evelyn moved to Clayton, North Carolina. She enjoyed riding her horse, Gal, swimming, animal rescue, and managing her zoo of 2 dogs and 10 cats. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Anna Klemstine, and her mother Edith Klemstine. Evelyn was Edith’s whole world and she dearly misses her every moment of every day. Evelyn will be laid to rest in Pennsylvania next to her father.
