Evelyn as she was affectionately called was educated in Augusta, Ga. Evelyn had only one son Ronnie C. Holmes, but there were others who referred to her as Mom. Evelyn relocated to Philadelphia, Pa in 1958 where she was reunited with family in West Philadelphia and met her future husband. Evelyn was married on August 27, 1960 to Ernest Young.
Evelyn worked for the Marriot Hotel and retired after 25 years of Housekeeping Service. However, she continued to work for Comfort Inn Suites and Sheraton Hotel until she finally retired in 2003.
Evelyn was a people person with a big heart which made her easy to like and love. She was well known for her wonderful smile and cheerful personality. She loved to share and give her last and yours, to help another. Also she was the life of the party and loved attending Masonic Balls all across the country. The other love of her life was “Gi Gi” and if you knew Evelyn you certainly knew who “Gi Gi” was.
On Wednesday morning, March 27, 2013, Evelyn departed this life and went home to be with the Lord. She is survived by her devoted and loving son Ronnie; supportive daughter-in-law Gail; step-sister Coretta Heath-Maynard; two granddaughters, Aja and Maia Holmes; three great granddaughters, Amaya, and Ania Holmes, and Gabrielle Thompson; loyal first cousins and a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
A precious love from us has gone
A voice we love is still
A place is vacant in our hearts
That no one can ever fill
In Tears we saw you sinking
And watched her fade away
Our hearts were broken
Watching you fight to stay
But when we finally saw you at rest
So peaceful and free from pain
How could we wish you back with us
To suffer all that again
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God took you home
Lovingly submitted,
The Family
