Giovanna was born on July 10, 1941, to Christopher and Maria Chiarappa in Mola Di Bari, Italy. She was the youngest in her family and shared her early life with her brothers Frank and Andre and her three sisters, Rita, Catherine and Margarita.
Giovanna moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1962 and attended night school at New Utrecht High School. That same year her future husband, Frank had volunteered to direct a talent show at New Utrecht. Frank was searching for a singer. He walked into a classroom and asked the students if anyone could sing. Giovanna raised her hand and said, “I can sing, I am a soprano”. Sing she did, right into Frank’s heart. They were married on July 31, 1965.
Giovanna immediately lit up every room she entered and made a lasting impact on those she came in contact with. She had a gift to always see the good in people. She made those all around her feel special with her gentle smile, her laughter and her kind eyes that would make you forget all of your troubles.
In her home, she was the Queen, but she ruled with kindness and an unwavering love for her husband and children. She taught her family many things but most importantly, she taught her family how to love.
Giovanna is survived by her husband of 57 years, Frank, her children Vincent, Frank and Claudia. Her son-in-law Alain and her three grandchildren Emmiblue, Aaron and Marina. She leaves behind many more beloved nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and friends.
Sunday mornings were filled with the smell of Sunday sauce and Giovanna’s voice which echoed throughout the house as she sang her favorite arias alongside Maria Callas.
If you close your eyes, you can still hear Giovanna’s beautiful voice. We hear you, Mom. You will sing in our hearts forever.
