

Mac grew up in Whiteville and joined the US Navy, serving on the USS Quincy heavy cruiser during WWII. The USS Quincy participated in the invasion of Normandy and Southern France. She was chosen to carry the late President Roosevelt to the decisive Yalta Conference. Upon completion of this operation, the Quincy was ordered to the Pacific. Here she traversed the center of a raging typhoon. She steamed to the shores of the Japanese homeland and bombarded the important cities of Kamaishi and Hammamatus. Mac was present in Tokyo Bay when the war ended in August of 1945.
After the war, Mac met his future wife, Edith Kathryne Singleton. They married in 1950 and became parents of three children, Sharon, Kathy and Susan.
In 1950, he enrolled in the NC Highway Patrol Training School where he moved up the ranks to Captain in his 34-year career. He was presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award by Governor Scott. Before his death, he held the distinction of being the oldest living retired NC Highway Patrolman.
Mac will be remembered for his integrity, honesty, sincerity, and sense of humor. He was honorable and truly a member of the Greatest Generation. His memory will live in the hearts of his family and friends.
Mac is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edith and daughter, Sharon Davis. He is survived by his daughters, Kathy McKee (Jerry Leonard) of Raleigh and Susan McKee (Richard Reeder) of Tulsa, OK; grandson, Bryan Davis (Allison); granddaughter, Lauren Posavetz (Andrew); and great grandsons, Parker, Tate, Jake and Case. Grandsons David (Susan), Brad (Lori); granddaughter Carrie Sue (Albert); great grandsons Daniel, Samuel, Elias, Johnathan and Gage; and great granddaughters Kate (Jordan) and Sydney.
A private graveside service for his family will be held with highway patrol honors at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mac’s honor to your favorite charity or to the St. Marks United Methodist Church in Raleigh.
