

Helen Lattimore died peacefully at home on June 12, 2011, at age 84. Born to James McNeil Turner and Essie Geneva Waller Turner in Horry County, SC, she was the middle one of three sisters. Her family moved to Fairbluff, NC, where she attended Fairbluff High School and went on to Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, where she got BA in Elementary Education and minored in History. Helen became an elementary school teacher for fifth graders in King’s Mountain, NC, where she met George Festus Lattimore, Jr. They married in the Fairbluff United Methodist Church and settled in Greensboro. There they had two sons before moving to Raleigh. She was married for 56 years until her husband preceded her in death in 2007.
Helen was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church, where she served the Lord. She enjoyed needlepoint, book club, playing bridge and Questers.
Helen is survived by her two sons, George M. Lattimore and his wife, Erin Duffie of Austin, TX and William Timothy Lattimore and his wife, Dr. Pax M. Lattimore of Raleigh. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, David M. Lattimore and his wife, Theresa of Virginia, Hannah A.L. Woodley and her husband, Derek, of Virginia, Jonathan A. Lattimore and his wife, Sarah of Del Rio, TX, Kathryn Pax Lattimore of Raleigh, NC, Kristen Anne Lattimore of Greenville, NC, George Walker Lattimore of Clemson, SC and W.T. Wyeth Lattimore of Lynchburg, Virginia.
Helen is also survived by her nephews, David Grieb of York, Virginia, Richard Darryl Thomas of Jessup, Maryland, Drew Thomas of Great Mills, Maryland, and her nieces Sally G. Hall of White Plains, New York and Lisa Ann Thomas of Westminister, Maryland.
Her grandson, Joseph Daniel Lattimore, preceded Helen in death.
Her family wishes to thank Arlene Lucas, Janice James, Maranda Mason and Jereau Wilson, her care-givers. Special thanks to her valued special assistant of over 45 years, Mrs. Christine Floyd and her husband, Mr Gaston Floyd, a special friend.
The family will receive friends 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Edenton Street United Methodist Church followed by a private family burial at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
