

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marlene Spoolman Myers , his two children- Amanda Myers Echterling of Harrisonburg, VA, son, Scott Avery Myers, one grandson, James Patrick Echterling (born 1/23/10), mother, Doris Bailey Myers of Thomasville, NC and sister Mary Guffey of Alamo, TX.
James was born on September 03, 1952 in Thomasville, NC to James Luther and Doris Bailey Myers.
James was a 1974 cum laude graduate of Western Carolina University where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and a marching band member of the WCU Catamounts.
On February 1, 1975, he married Marlene Spoolman at Park Place Baptist Church in Thomasville, NC. James and Marlene settled in Raleigh in 1977 where he began a long career with NC State Government beginning with the NC Department of Education. He retired March 31, 2010 from the Office of Information Technology Services.
The couple joined Trinity Baptist Church in 1977 where James has served in various positions including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and founding member of the Trinity Brass Ensemble. In June 1987, James performed with Baptist Singers USA on a European concert tour.
More recently, James was coordinator of the Trinity Disaster Relief Team where he organized and participated in many trips to Katrina affected areas, most often Gulfport, MS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, April 26 at Trinity Baptist Church on Six Forks Road. The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road, from 7:00 to 9:00PM Sunday Night.
Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Instrumental Music Ministry, the NC Baptist Men Disaster Relief Fund, or to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
