Lena Mae Edwards Winton passed away following a brief illness on September 25, 2023, at the age of 94. Predeceased by her parents Alex and Lila Edwards, husband Kenneth Winton, daughter Linda Pynn, grandson Patrick Petty, and son-in-law Stephen Squires, Lena Mae is survived by daughters Judy Squires, Ginny Petty, and Laura Meadows, and sons-in-law Pete Petty, and Will Meadows. She was a loving grandmother to Caitlin Colvin (Alex), Robben Petty, Ashley Pynn (Katie), Erin Petty (Thomas White), Abby Burks (Joshua), Lila Meadows, and Billy Meadows. Her greatest delight were her great-grandchildren Riley Colvin, Noah Colvin, Emerson Colvin, Rooster White, and namesake Winnie Pynn. She is also survived by her brother Robert Edwards of Louisburg, NC; sister Shirley Frankos of Portsmouth, VA; cousin Pat Kennedy (Leland) of Wake Forest, NC; and brother-in-law Bill Winton (Charlotte) of Dallas, TX.
A graduate of Louisburg College, Lena’s secretarial career led her to Lexington, NC, where she caught the eye of a young Virginian. Ken and Lena began their 53 years of marriage in 1953, soon settling in Raleigh, where they raised Judy, Ginny, and twins Linda and Laura. Guiding her girls throughout their lives, she showed by example the virtues of kindness, loyalty, and service to others. To her grandchildren, she was a constant source of love, wisdom, and acceptance.
Lena enjoyed many enduring friendships, from her Louisburg high school girlfriends, to the Brentwood friends she and Ken held close through the years, to the treasured Steel Magnolias she came to know as bookkeeper at West Millbrook and Enloe High School, to the Greenville friends whose loving support was so faithful in her later years.
The family would like to thank the ladies of Serenity Falls Family Care Home, and Joshua of Transitions LifeCare for providing such a loving environment and tender care in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Linda Pynn Nurse Practitioner Scholarship. Donations made payable to ECU MHSF (with Pynn Scholarship in the memo), can be mailed to Elizabeth Maxwell, Director of Development, ECU College of Nursing, PO Box 8489, 690 Medical Dr, Greenville, NC 27835.
A memorial service for Lena Mae will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609, followed by a reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
