Mary Sue Smith

Mary Sue was born April 10, 1925 in Boone, NC to W.R. Winkler and Effie Vance Winkler. She attended Appalachian State University and the University of Kentucky. Mary Sue was employed with the NC Department of Public Instruction where she retired after more than 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Raleigh.

Mary Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Roy L. Smith; her parents and a sister, Betty Ruth Moier.

She is survived by her son, Roy Linley Smith, Jr. and his wife, Suzie of High Point; daughter, Susan George and her husband, David of Raleigh; brother, William Ralph Winkler, Jr. and his wife, Evelyn of Boone, NC; sisters, Carolyn Congleton of Barberville, KY; and Marbeth Fidler and her husband, Carl of Boone; grandchildren, Daniel; Amanda; Samantha; Rebecca; Courtney; Colton; and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens in Boone, NC.
