Rene “Cathy” Catherine Keever was born in Huntsville, Alabama on December 28, 1964. She claimed Raleigh, North Carolina as her home. Cathy was a spitfire and full of adventure! After graduating from Sanderson High School in 1983, she owned a pizza parlor, drove a school bus, worked at the NC State Fair, and completed her bachelor’s in accounting at Meredith College. Recently, she was anxiously awaiting her return to work for the NC Department of Revenue. She liked to keep moving and built long lasting friendships - Trent Currin-Dull, Anne Trent Currin, Ann Caddell, Misty Green, and Christina Carter - to name a few.
Cathy greeted everyone with a smile and approached life with a positive attitude. When asked how she was doing, her go-to response was “super terrific,” even over her last few trying months. Cathy never hesitated to offer a helping hand, whether it was volunteering with Girl Scouts, entertaining her great-nieces, Jenna, Julianne, and Jamilynne, or bringing her trademark sweet tea, pickles, and lemon ice box pie to every family affair. She often came to the aid of her sisters-in-law, Belinda and Carey, whether it was for last minute baby-sitting, a home improvement project, or even a shoulder to cry on. Cathy had a gift for diffusing difficult situations, knowing exactly what you needed to hear at the right time, and if all else failed, she had a White Russian handy.
Cathy’s driving force was her family. She loved being the “fun” aunt to her nieces - Jennifer, Melissa, Maria, Beth, Dana, MacKenzie, and Fairlie. Whether playing backgammon, swimming in the canal at Topsail, road tripping to Georgia, finding the best Christmas lights, enjoying brunch, or just dodging the camera, Cathy promised a good time. She took her role as a sister seriously and enjoyed quality time with her siblings: breakfasting with her awesome big brother, Cebe, every Saturday morning, walking on the beach with her thoughtful little brother, Ronnie, and helping her sister, Robyn, with her courier service.
Cathy’s life accomplishment was being a mother and a grandmother. She doted on her daughter, Amanda, and her son, Brandon, and was the best “May May” to her grandson, Colton. She enjoyed making sushi with Brandon, getting pedicures and being a best friend to Amanda (much like her own relationship with her mother), and listening to Colton sing in the car. She referred to her pack as ABC2.
Cathy’s time on earth was far too short. She passed away surrounded by loved ones after a heroic battle with cancer. She joins her beloved parents, Bob and Hazel, and the love of her life, Calvin, in her passing. Sadie, her fur baby, is going to miss her momma.
Please join the family in saying goodbye entirely too soon. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 4921 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Duke Children’s Hospital in Cathy Keever’s memory at https://www.gifts.duke.edu/dch.
Remember, Cathy would wish us all “a super terrific day.”
