Riley Everett Rehberg, born on July 3, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Maltice Townsend and the late Malcolm Townsend, passed away at age 80 on September 6, 2018 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Riley was the beloved husband of Faye Rehberg and is also survived by his daughter, Sharon Lubbers, and grandson, Payne Lubbers. He leaves behind his greatly beloved dogs, Duke and Maggie.
Growing up in a constantly-moving Navy family, Riley lived all over the United States; his most cherished years as a child were spend in Kodiak, Alaska. Later, the family moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he would go on to graduate from Norview High School. Riley then attended Durham Technical College and North Carolina State University before beginning a more than thirty-year career as a design engineer at the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Riley was an avid outdoorsman for his entire life, and loved to fish and hunt with his friends, coworkers and grandson. When he was not enjoying the outdoors or spending time with his family and dogs, Riley could be found either with a book or newspaper in his hand. He loved Westerns and mystery novels, reading a full book nearly every week, and read the News and Observer cover to cover daily; Riley particularly enjoyed the comic section was always up to date on current events.
Riley will be particularly remembered for how much time and effort he invested into his family and friends. He loved watching his grandson’s football games throughout high school and staying up to date with Payne’s activities at college. His priority was always the happiness and wellbeing of others, particularly his much beloved wife, daughter and grandson.
A visitation will be held at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E Millbrook Rd, Raleigh on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 6:00-8:00pm. A private burial will follow on Monday, September 10, 2018 at Fairview Cemetery, in Warrenton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Riley to St. Baldrick’s Foundation, 1333 South Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400 Monrovia, CA, 91016.
