Terry was the first neighbor to welcome us at our first neighborhood gathering. She and her husband were lovely. 

The strongest memory I have is learning a powerful lesson in the art of the filibuster, and how working outside the system is effective and important. 

In our neighborhod association, we were going through a time of discord and drama that ended up in a member's meeting where we were required to elect a new board of directors and were not allowed to nominate existing directors. Terry was having none of it. From the moment the meeting started, she began to speak about the issue, the unfairness of the constraints, giving the history of the neighborhood, and she kept on. The facilitator kept trying to get a word in edgewise and was clearly uncomfortable trying to shut down a "little old lady" so she ran with it. The result was that the crowd starting getting fired up and motivated to act instead of passively accepting what were being given.  She became my hero in that moment.

We were successful in making a positive change and avoided a feared outcome that would have taken power from the neighborhood. I was fighting with Robert's Rules, she was fighting with righteousness. 

When the meeting ended she went up to the moderator and chewed him out for violating rules and acting in poor faith - he was trying to leave and she followed him out, still chastising him, and his lawyers actually stepped between them so that he could escape to the parking lot.

Through her example, in one evening she cured me of an unhealthy tendency towards politeness in the face of bullying.

That was the same day she received her terminal diagnosis.

Her fearlessness, courage, persistence, sincerity and drive changed my world. I wish I told her this. I've thought about her over the last couple years many times. Even though I knew her for only a few hours of her life, she made a deep impression. What an amazing woman.

I just learned of Terry's passing. Our relationship goes back years having met each other through social activism. I met Terry when we were both addressing the US Patriot Act abuses on civil liberties in this country. Once we met we learned that we both had a common social justice activism history going back decades. We both were involved in Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility almost 30 years ago. Terry was a very smart and thoughtful person. She will be missed.

We are deeply sorrowed to hear Terry passed away.  We enjoyed spending holidays and other times together.  We appreciated her generosity, her empathy towards and involvement in social causes.  Our sympathy goes out to Bernie.  May her memory be a blessing.
