Missing you Buddy.  I think of you often and find a hole in my heart where you used to and still live.  But I know one day we'll be together again.   I know you are with the Lord and that soothes the pain in my heart and missing you.

Specialist Chuck Greer was my best friend in Vietnam.  We had served together in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.  We were transferred to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell in fall of 1967 to be part of the 101st Airborne Division’s move to Vietnam in December 1967 to rejoin our 1st brigade which had been in Vietnam since July of 1965.

We initially served in the same area and grew to be inseparable.  I can’t say how important it was to have a best friend like Chuck in Vietnam.  It made the whole Vietnam experience more bearable.  We were so close that we took our R&R to Singapore together. 

As the Army always does, Chuck and I were separated after a few months.  My team was moved to support HQ of our 101st 3rd Brigade in I Corps in Northern South Vietnam.  I didn’t see Chuck again, but we communicated by letter occasionally before and after he went home.  Life happened and we lost track of each other.  We each had families and careers and 50 years of time just passed so quickly.

I finally caught a picture on Facebook of a white-haired older gentleman and I knew I had found my best friend from Vietnam.  

With assistance of a nephew of Chuck’s, we were re-united, I think in 2017 or 2018.  I can’t express how happy that made me.  We had some wonderful phone calls and chats during that time.  To lose him just a few years later was devastating to me.  My heart was broken and I felt so alone.  

But my family and friends had always nourished me with love and friendship so I’ve never really had to go it alone.  While Chuck’s passing shook me to my core, I know that when our Lord comes to straighten out the mess we’ve made on the Earth, we will meet again.  And he’ll be able to meet my family and my other wonderful friends.

So long Buddy, I miss you so very much but I’ll see you again.  Thank you for sharing Vietnam with me.

Although we lived far from each other, he was one of my best friends.
 The most loving caring man ever. He never complained about anything and always had a voice of strength.

We often talked about the scriptures, one of his favorites was Proverbs 3: 1-35 
 He will be missed but will live again in the Kingdom of God


I knew Chuck for many years. We’re Starbucks friends as well as close friends. We were more than cousins but almost brother and sister as Anita symbolically adopted me and called me her Little Girl.

 I always admired Chuck he took great care of his mom and never complained about anything!!
 Chuck will never be gone as he will live in our hearts forever.

Papa was a great man with a big ole heart and a great sense of humor. Earth was honored to have him.

Chuck is some one that I will always try to emulate for the rest of my life. He was a great man that always put others needs above his own. The positive and go getting energy that he put out into the world will stay upon the family and friends that he was he was accompanied by. I will truly miss him.

Chuck not only was a dear brother, but he was my friend.  We called each other "partners in crime" while in high school and college together.

I have so many hilarious stories, good stories and fun stories.  

I remember when we walked to catch a bus for school and every day literally, I would see Chuck running to catch that bus while the driver was leaving!  I always told him "wait" here comes my brother!

When we were very young, we were supposed to go out and play while the little brothers were napping.  We had 18 acres, so were about in the middle.  Chuck was setting off caps on a rock and started a small fire.  We got on our knees and started blowing that fire out!  Ooops, burned the 18 acres!

He was also a confidant.  We talked about everything.  He was patient and understanding with me and everyone.  This man had the kindest heart anyone could have.   He loved Jesus, he loved his  wife and children with a passion.  His grandsons he bragged about always.  He was so proud of his family.

This kindness and generosity spread to anyone and everyone.

You would never hear a complaint from him.  He could never say an unkind word about anyone.  He handled his illness with strength and dignity.

There are no words to describe the beauty of Chuck's soul.  He was amazing and I will miss him terribly.

I love you Chuck!  So thankful to know I will see you again!

From my earliest memories, Brother Chuck (Clancy to me) was a part of my life and 12 months younger. He loved being with family and friends. He always had "just one more thing" to add to a conversation. I would describe Chuck as being generous, caring, and grateful.
It was my desire to encourage Chuck to have a close relationship with his Savior, taking one day at a time and allowing the Lord to guide his days. This seemed to bring him peace in later years. Now Chuck is in the presence of his Savior. We will meet one day very soon. What a day of rejoicing! Having a brother who was also a great friend was a wonderful way to grow up. Even though Chuck and I were about 14 years apart in age, I have many fond memories of him. 

Chuck put 100-percent of himself into everything he did. I remember several times golfing with him when I was in the Redding area. To say he was competitive doesn’t quite describe Chuck’s energy when playing that game. 

He was avid at exercising and staying in shape. That included running about five miles a day and spending dedicated time in a local gym. 

We shared a common affinity for radio. For Christmas one year as a youngster, I got a Radio Shack kit that enabled the two of us to “broadcast” to the living room. Many years later, Chuck had an opportunity to work on weekends at a local station.

Many years of Chuck’s career was spent as a smokejumper with the U.S. Forest Service. Several times one summer, I rode my bike to the jumper facility on Airport Road and got to see Chuck at work. It was obvious he enjoyed every minute of that job, especially the outdoors and his fellow jumpers.

I also attribute much of my Starbucks’ habit to Chuck. I would never have known about lemonade iced tea if he had not introduced me to that tasty drink. Chuck always made a Starbucks run when I went with him on errands the days we visited our mother in Redding.

I am thankful to know that I will see Chuck again someday in heaven. 

Although my brother, Chuck, was three years older than me, we had many good times together playing with our siblings and enjoying activities (mostly adventurous/dangerous) with kids at our church youth group.  Sometimes even more relaxed indoor "jam sessions" with the group.  He played the accordion, my sisters played violins (ouch!) and I played clarinet.  
We both went into the Army in 1966.  He was far more outdoorsy than me and chose to volunteer for Airborne duty.  I played in the Army band...hoping to avoid danger!
Before he left for Viet Nam (me to Korea) we tore a dollar bill in half and, if we arrived back home safely, we'd join it and us back together for stories over a cold soda.
Pursuing different careers after discharge we managed to see each other and our families regularly.  The cousins had great times together.
As an exciting, outdoors-type, adventure-loving brother he was compassionate, loving and kind. He understood and lived out the Scripture's Great Commandment:  Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself.
He never forgot his first love...Jesus Christ.

Chuck was a great father in law and friend. He was funny, smart and very friendly. He loved to talk and recall adventures from throughout his life. He was one of the most kind hearted and thoughtful people I've ever known.

I liked watching funny movies with Papa. I like walks with him. I liked going to Oregon with him. He was funny. 

My dad was always considerate and he always had a good sense of humor. He loved to joke with me, even about the little things. He always put everyone before himself. He was also always ready to listen. He was best dad and I miss him so much. 

I've known Chuck since I met Mike in 1982, 6th grade. I knew him as a go getter. He would run 5-8 miles every day and was a very active man. He would always bring up stories about Vietnam and Smoke Jumping.
     Kim and I started dating in 1991 and were married in 1996. Chuck was always supportive of Kim and I and loved his grandsons deeply.
     When we moved to Redding in 2001 Chuck would come over to our house every Friday night. We would have dinner and play video golf on  the PC. This was one of our favorite things to do. He always wanted to go to a concert and watch the 49ers live. We went to a Richard Marks concert and went to a 49er/Seahawks game. We had a great time even though the Seahawks won.
Chuck was the best father-in-law anyone could have. He was a very compassionate man. I hope to be like Chuck when I grow up. I miss him greatly. I love you Chuck..

It was a neat treat skiing with my dad at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. It also was quality time going wood cutting with my dad; he always knew what tree to cut down. He was never afraid to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Of course, with a parachute. He was also very athletic. 

My dad was a kind, compassionate, considerate, thoughtful and caring man. I remember going to see my dad at his office and getting a ride home from school. He was very athletic and enjoyed running in the 4th of July race every year. Have went running everyday, usually 5 miles. He really enjoyed working out and going to the gym. The last 2 years with him was a treat for me. I enjoyed spending time with him and going to get a milkshake after his appointments, sometimes Starbucks (decaf, extra hot, white chocolate mocha) as well. He was the best dad ever!!
