Helen Wolter was born August 4, 1925 in Black Earth, Wisconsin and passed on to heaven Sept. 27, 2023. She was the second daughter of seven girls raised by Giovania and Mabel Donzelli. Helens sisters by birth order are Nancy, Lucy, Stella, Mary, Mabel and Carmella.
The early childhood years were passed in the eastern states, with family moving out to California during the depression. They settled in communities near Los Angeles. Helen and Lucy had horses in their teen years and rode in parades as well as performing with a small circus. She also worked in aircraft construction near the end of World War II.
The family moved to a small ranch in Big Valley in the late 1940’s. She met Chester Wolter and they were married in the summer of 1949. They established their home in Adin where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Chester worked in the wood products industry until retirement and Helen worked for the USFS until retirement. They both enjoyed being out in the woods, fields, streams and lakes pursuing hunting and fishing interest. They also spent a lot of effort encouraging younger generations in the pleasures associated hunting and fishing.
Helen was a thorough and supportive mother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen also served as a girl scout leader for young girls around the Big Valley area in the 1960’s. Helen was good homemaker, having a plentiful vegetable and flower garden. She spent a lot of time canning and freezing all that was grown for use during the long months outside of summer and early fall. In addition, after retirement, she volunteered as an election pole worker, and assisted other seniors with simply financial reporting tasks.
Helen is survived by sisters Stella Johnson, Mabel Lythgoe, Carmella Elphison, son Jim Wolter, daughter Phyllis Yeargin, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
