Words cannot express the heartbreak I feel for you, your family and Berke's family. But at the same time I need you to know how thankful I am for the job Berle loved and did. He was given the authority to protect us, the people. And he did as long as he could. 
This was in my devotional this morning. I pray it helps you:
John 15:12-13 - My command is this: Love each another as I have loved you. Greater lave has no one than this: to lay down one's life for his friends. 
Our husbands have risk you jobs but they do it to protect us, love us and love their jobs. 
Praying for comfort and healing.

God had bigger plans for Berke. I only met yall once at the pool but my heart aches for your family. I pray that God will give you and your family peace, comfort and strength during this time. You have the support and love of our Community. Peace be with you

This is so sad, but even more so because of what was happening the day he died. Hatred and violence are things of the past I though. Please God intervein and make things right so that our people don't have to die in such a senseless way. God love us and I trust that he will make everything right.

Bravery is hard to come across.  It is with a heavy heart that we will miss Mr. Bates for his willingness to protect and serve. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. I hadn't seen Berke in many years, but have so many memories of him from his years at the University of Tennessee.  Thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they cope with this loss!  Far too soon even in light of the fact that he dies doing something he had always dreamed of.

Mike and I are so saddened by this news. What a wonderful man Berke was. He touched everyone who knew him and his service to the State of Florida and Virginia leaves behind wonderful memories. He was doing what he loved. Not everyone can say that.  Prayers for Amanda and the children. God's blessings and may His arms hold you all during this season of grief.
