

Cora Mae Smith Simmons, 84, of Sandston, VA, died Friday, November 29, 2013. The widow of Edward W. Simmons Sr., she was preceded by two sons David Simmons and Ed Simmons II; two sisters Dot Cash and Alice Flint. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Kathy Keller and husband, Bob; one son, Dennis Simmons; one brother, John Smith of Ladylake, FL; one sister, Bonnie Gibbs and husband, Earl of Burkville, VA; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, baking, spending time with family, summer vacations to the beach with four generations, and sharing her Christian faith. She will be remembered for her kindness, gentleness, her servant’s heart, for never forgetting to send a card or say a prayer, and for spending her life in service to others. Mrs. Simmons was a member of Corinth United Methodist Church where for over a decade she enjoyed serving as a “shepherd” to many church members through monthly letters. She taught Sunday school classes for 40 years, beginning at St. James UMC and most recently at Corinth UMC. She was a member of the Naomi Chapter of the Eastern Star. She retired from the McGuire Woods law firm in 2011 with 25 years of service at the age of 82. Prior to that position she had worked over 25 years as secretary to the president of Southern Department Stores. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23231. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Corinth United Methodist Church, 23 West Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, Virginia 23150.In lieu of flowers please consider contributions to Corinth United Methodist Church.
