Jay fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming an active-duty Soldier in the U.S. Army and was also a member of New Life Baptist Church. Jay was a bright soul whose caring heart touched everyone he met. With his infectious smile, he had the ability to light up any room and bring warmth to those around him. To know him was to love him.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Elbert Benfield; grandmother, Dinah Benfield; aunt, Wendy Benfield; and uncle, Joel Benfield.
He is survived by his dad, David Benfield, Sr.; mom, Megan Cash; sister, Madison Benfield; grandfather, Melvin Cash, Jr. (Diane); grandmother, Lynne Lamm; uncle, Jeremy Benfield; aunt, Heather Shears; and cousins, Ryan Cash, Rebecca Benfield, Kameryn Shears, Brandon Benfield, Jack Shears and Hannah Benfield and countless amount of friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231 where a funeral service will follow at 4 p.m.
A reception will follow the funeral service at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center, 11 J B Finley Road, Sandston, VA 23150.
