FIELDS, Delores Ann (Fitzpatrick), 87, of Mechanicsville, VA, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Friday, June 23, 2023. Delores was born in April 1936 to Hayes and Juanita (Merritt) Fitzpatrick in the coalmining town of Whipple, WV and grew up in the community of Oak Hill attending Oak Hill Elementary and Oak Hill High School. She was the oldest of 10 children in total. In 2017 Delores’ husband and soulmate of 62 years, Glen, passed peacefully in her arms. Delores was an avid supporter of all children, not just her own. She spent her life and marriage focusing on making the many houses she lived in a place all could call home. From 1965 until 1981 Delores never missed a school function or sporting event her children were involved in. Later, as her grandchildren came along, she made every effort to be present in their lives too; from plays to award ceremonies to sports to marriages. Delores gave her all to everyone in her family. Crossword puzzles, crocheting, knitting, sewing, ceramics, and gardening were passions of hers. Everywhere she went she carried a crossword puzzle. When others only talked about it, Delores acted on it by organizing baseball leagues and boy scout troops so the young boys in the community could be involved instead of sitting idly by. Side-by-side with Glen, Delores brought life back to the floundering local Babe Ruth baseball league, saving it for future generations to enjoy as much as her sons and their friends did.
On Friday, surrounding by her family, Glen came and took Delores’ hand and softly and gently took her soul to be with him for eternity – continuing their journey they began on earth. She is healed. She can walk. She can dance. She is well. She suffers no more. We are comforted with this knowledge.
Delores’ legacy lives on with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren – both already here and those yet to come – leaving behind to cherish her memory and the unbiased love and support she always showed, are her six children and their spouses: Carla Beazley (Brad), Ray Fields (Karen), Danny Fields (Barbara), Diane Grosz (Dane), Keith Fields (Robin), and Joey Fields (Andrea); her 15 grandchildren and their spouses: Joey Robinson (Amy), Megan Mallory (James), Ashley Dogoli, Lindsay Brockman (Jay), Glen Fields (Elizabeth), Danny Fields II (Courtney), Tiffany Long (Matt), Kathleen Sisk (Josh), Brandy Coullier (Justin), Scott Seal (Hannah), Paul Grosz (Ashley Rivers), Trey Seal (Jessica), Brandon Fields (Haley), Rebecca Fields (Lew Johnson), and Mandy Fields; and her 32 great grandchildren: Aryanna Robinson, Holden Robinson, CJ Mallory, Dylan Mallory, Witten Dogoli, Edie Brockman, Layla Fields, Savannah Fields, Katlyn Fields, Chase Long, Blake Long, Cheyenne Long, Aidan Sisk, Nolan Sisk, Raegan Jones, Jackson Coullier, Leah Seal, Violet Seal, Emily Seal, Scott Seal II, Zachary Seal, Lily Grosz, Dawn Seal, Joseph Seal, Ivy Seal, Kynadee Fields, Emersyn Fields, Marley Lemons, Peter Fields, Sacred Williams, Sophia Williams, and True Mathis.
Delores is also survived by 4 brothers: Eddie Fitzpatrick (Jackie), NM, David Fitzpatrick (Vicky), AZ, Lewis Brewer (WV), and Butch Szuch, TX; 2 sisters: Alexis Wilkerson, WV, and Merry Douglas (Bill), OH; and 3 in-laws: Rochelle Fitzpatrick, HI, Kathy Fields, WA, and Patricia Garza (Vince), TX. Delores was pre-deceased by her parents and stepparents: Hayes Fitzpatrick (Ernestine), Juanita Szuch (Alex); 2 brothers: Robert Fitzpatrick and Michael Szuch; and one sister, Mary Fitzpatrick.
The family wishes to publicly thank the following people for their kindnesses shown to Delores the last month of her life:
Our hundreds of lifelong friends for the love, comfort, prayers, support, and encouragement shown since 2004 when our Dad was first diagnosed with cancer, through his journey, through his passing, through Mom’s journey, and now her passing. Friends near and far have held us up through all of this. Thank you all so very much.
Jordan, Carla, and Dell, her medical team from Nayar Hospice; thank you for being so gentle and attentive to our mother the last month of her life. She respected you all and appreciated the respect and tenderness you showed her. Thank you.
And to Gina Maio – the family doesn’t have adequate words to thank you for being there on May 23, 2023, when our mother said, “will you Baptize me?” and you immediately, without hesitation, said “I would be honored”. Your willingness to do this, having never done so before, gave not only Mom, but all her family, a peace beyond all understanding knowing we will get to see our mother again in heaven. This knowledge is all that’s gotten us through the days and nights that have and are to come. God Bless you.
Mom loved flowers of all types and every color. She planted flowers everywhere she ever lived. They gave her great joy. Please feel free to send flowers if you wish.
And finally, Mom believed in no one going hungry, especially children, and gave faithfully to charities that supported feeding those in need. Since 2018 her charity of choice has been Pappy’s Pantry Ministries. This non-profit was created to continue the charitable work of our dad. The family would be honored if those who would like to give would consider giving to Pappy’s as well. Secure online donations can be made at: www.pappyspantryministries.org They can also be found on Facebook.
