Edward Norwood Newbill

Edward—known fondly to friends and family as Eddie, Tom, Dad, Grandpa, Papa Tom, Chrome Top, and YoYo—was born August 9, 1929, in Halifax County, Va. He loved to recount his early days, and his favorite memories always seemed to revolve around hard work, baseball games with friends, and homemade ice cream. As an adult, he worked as a mechanic for Philip Morris, from which he retired after decades of dedicated service.

Along with his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Edith, he had six children and numerous grandchildren and great-grands who were the lights of his life. Eddie and Edith split their time between homes in Chesterfield, Gwynn’s Island, and Buckingham—Gwynn’s Island for summer, Buckingham for hunting in the winter, and Chesterfield for the rest of the year. Eddie never met a stranger, and nothing brought him greater joy than welcoming new friends and neighbors to his home.

He was the proud founder of 718 Hunt Club in Buckingham, and a member of the Mathews Yacht Club. He enjoyed deer hunting, bay fishing, and entertaining all who crossed his path.

Eddie was predeceased by his wife, Edith Vincil Newbill; his parents, Ocie Newbill Rorer, Harry Leslie Newbill; his brothers, Harry L. Newbill Jr., James Richard Newbill; and his daughter, Debra N. Williams.

He is survived by his children, Edward L. Newbill, Linda Starling (Rick), Lana Simmons, Theresa Carter (Roy), Jeffrey Thomas III; grandchildren, Lorrie Colbert, Nikki Williams, Scott Starling, Holly D’Amore, Jason Starling, Michael Simmons, Roger Simmons Jr., Wendy Davis, Stacey Overton, Roy Carter Jr.; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service celebrating Eddie’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23231, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
