Henry Milton Mercer, 95, a cherished father, grandfather, and Korean War veteran, peacefully left his home in Williamstown, WV on May 18, 2025, and went to be with Jesus. He left behind a legacy of love, strength, and dedication. Born on June 19, 1929 in Pink Hill, North Carolina, he was the son of Henry Washington Mercer and Louellen Turner.
Henry proudly served his country during the Korean War, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a profound sense of duty and resilience. After his military service, he pursued a career in carpentry, a field in which he excelled and dedicated himself for the entirety of his professional life. His craftsmanship and work ethic were a source of pride, as he took great joy in creating and building.
He was preceded in death by his former spouse and lifelong friend, Shirley Mercer. Henry was a dad to Deborah Steele, Darrow Mercer, Beth (Robert) Wade, and Lisa Estep. His legacy continues through his ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and four, soon to be five, great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
As the seventh of thirteen children, Henry was known for his determination, humor, and the love he shared with his family. He lived the longest among his siblings, a testament to his enduring spirit and the strength he drew from his close-knit family. He was preceded in death by his siblings Foy, Andrew, Janie, George, Adelle, Hazel, James, Woodrow, Johnny and Bobby. He is survived by Lynwood (Janette) Mercer and Mavis (Charles) Ircink as well as countless nieces and nephews who adored “Uncle Mort”.
He was a symbol of spunk and determination to the team of caregivers that made it possible for Henry to live out his final days in the comfort of his home. A void has been left in the lives of Vicki, Debbie, Darcy, Amber, Cheryl, Kyle, Katie, and Lora who all tended to him in some capacity, ever adapting to his changing needs. Henry shared his love of honey buns with Chloe Grace, his faithful, canine companion.
Henry will be remembered for his sense of ingenuity, his work ethic, and the countless memories he created with those he loved. His laughter and wisdom will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside memorial service will be held to honor Henry's life on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 3:00 pm. 506 South Holly Avenue, Highland Springs, VA, 23075, where family and friends will gather to celebrate the remarkable man he was.
