Jackie was born on February 4, 1944, in Richmond, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Lillian Holmes; as well as her stepmother, Erma Holmes; sister, Patricia Holmes; and nephews, Michael and Maxi Broadus.
Jackie owned and ran a successful catering business serving the Elko community, her church, weddings, and many special events throughout the years. For 17 years, she catered the Wednesday Night Suppers at Poplar Spring Baptist Church.
The garden is where you could always find Jackie. She loved being in the hot, summer sun working her mile long vegetable garden. Known to her grandchildren as "Nan", she shared her love of gardening with her grandchildren and would often involve them in garden activities. Jackie earned her Master Gardener certification and continued to learn and share her knowledge and love of gardening throughout the years.
Jackie loved her community and was a lifetime member of the Windsor Club of Elko. You would always see Jackie at events happening at the Elko Hall. She served on the board for many years and was instrumental in the planning of many events that took place at the Hall.
Jackie loved her church, Antioch Baptist Church, and was very involved with running the church kitchen where she fed so many people over the years, some celebrating milestones and some saying goodbye to dear friends. It was her talent for cooking and working tirelessly that is a lasting testimony to her service to her church and giving back to the people of the community just when they needed it.
For many years, Jackie organized and hosted at her home, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day celebrations for family and friends. These were well-attended events and was another way that she kept the community together, especially the elderly.
Jackie stayed close with the elderly in her community and church, always ensuring that they were taken care of and if they were sick, she would be by their bedside taking care of them.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 62 years, Arthur P. Dean; children, John Dean (Carol), Bucky Dean (Sheela), David Dean; grandchildren, Kristen Dean, Harrison Dean, Katelyn Breitmeyer (Eric), Kevin Dean, Lee Dean (Jenny); great grandchildren, Olivia, Millie, Carson, Cooper; and nephew, Leo Mitchell.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231.
