Marie Hassel Jenkins, 73, of Highland Springs, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Elizabeth Hassel. A state employee for 30 years, Mrs. Jenkins was a former tax examiner for the Virginia Employment Commission. She was a previous member of St. John's United Church of Christ, as well as Drewry's Bluff and New Covenant Presbyterian Churches. Marie was active with the VEC bowling league, the Richmond Animal League, the Girl Scouts and the Junior Woman's Club. An avid gardener, Mrs. Jenkins enjoyed being outdoors. Her optimism and generous laugh were unmistakable. She is survived by her children, Beth Jenkins Smith (Peter) of Alexandria and Mike Jenkins of Chesterfield; two grandsons; and her brother, Chris Hassel (Sedley) of Nashville, Tenn. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017, from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. A private inurnment will be held at Hollywood Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FeedMore.org.
