Born on September 18, 1947, Sissy dedicated her life to taking care of those she loved, especially her family. Though she never married or had children of her own, she passionately cared for every niece, nephew, child or dog that came into her life. Sissy found happiness in simple pleasures like playing the lottery or scratch tickets, bowling, shopping, and watching her soaps or Hallmark, especially with an ice cold Coca-Cola.
Sissy was preceded in death by her father, James Taylor; her mother, Lillie Louise Atkins; stepfather, Arthur Atkins; sisters, Patricia and Judy Atkins; brother, Allen "Bubba" Atkins; and her twin brother, James Taylor.
Having remained at home throughout a battle with dementia, Sissy is survived by her loving brother, Larry Atkins and devoted sister in law and caretaker, Teresa Atkins; as well as her niece, Michelle Atkins; and nephew, L.J. Atkins; and guard dogs, Rory and Mali. This was made possible thanks to the care of Tabitha Payne and the doting staff at Dogwood Village who spoiled her with love during her respite time.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her siblings, Larry (Teresa) Atkins; Danny (Tina) Atkins; and Diane Atkins. Her legacy of care will live on in the lives of all of her many nieces and nephews, but especially those fortunate enough to grow up close to home: Tammy Nelson; Michelle, L.J., D.J., and Kyle Atkins. The words she often said, “Gotta love me,” will continue to resonate with them throughout their lives.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home in Richmond, VA, with James Sumpter of Landmark Baptist Church officiating the service at noon. Graveside services will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
