He was preceded in death by his parents Addie Mae and Fayette Dexter Greer, brother James H. Greer, niece Theresa Sechman and his beloved cat Scootie.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Margaret Mylum Greer, daughters Laura M. Greer and Sandra Greer Schiedel, grandson SSGT Austin K. Ludwig USAF, granddaughter Amanda Ludwig Long and husband Sean, nephew James Greer (Diane), niece Nancy Washburn (Bill) and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bob began his career at The Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1946. In 1951 he had to break from the newspaper and entered the United States Air Force serving through 1953 during the Korean War. After proudly serving his country, he returned to the Times-Dispatch and retired in 1991 with 44 years of dedicated service. He was so very proud of his time there and made many lasting friends. After only three months into “retirement”, he went to work at the Virginia Aviation Museum where he stayed for close to 15 years. As much as Bob enjoyed his career(s), he also loved his time in the back yard tending to his beautiful lawn and feeding the wildlife. He had long since given up his Hatteras fishing trips and family vacations finding, instead, contentment to just be at home. In these last few years, you could find him sitting peacefully in the sun on his patio, eyes closed, listening to the songs of his little feathered friends with his wife and cat Scootie. He was faithful to his God and faithful to his family. That was truly a life well lived.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 1pm Friday, July 28th at Nelsen Funeral Home located at 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA., 23231.
The family would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Sean Long to always lend a hand to “Nonnie and Bob” when they needed assistance. We also wish to thank the caregivers and staff at Visiting Angels, notably Patricia and Wanda, for the loving care shown to Bob and VCU Hospice for aiding the family in our time of need.
