Verna Lee Vanhook

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Sr. and Virginia Gregory; her sister, Suzanne Abel; her brother, Benjamin Gregory Jr.; and her former husband, James D. Vanhook.

A life-long Richmonder, Verna dedicated her time and energy in service of helping others by volunteering alongside her family at Calvary United Methodist Church and charitable organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and the Eastern Henrico Ruritan Club. She retired from her position as Deputy Registrar with the Virginia Department of Health in 2022.

Verna enjoyed singing in the choir, gardening, shopping, playing cards, and traveling with her friends & family.

She is survived by her uncle, Gene Bowles Jr. (Pat); her brother, Daniel Gregory; her son, James E. Vanhook (Kimberly); her grandson, James C. Baker; her nephew, Robert Abel (Melissa); her nieces, Laura Shipp (Nick), Jenni Robinson (Charter); and her great nieces, Mackenzie Abel and Fallon Robinson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 24 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, followed by inurnment in Oakwood Cemetery, 3101 Nine Mile Road.

The family invites friends to a Celebration of Life at 1:00 pm at Tuckahoe Moose Lodge, 4366 Springfield Road.
