

Vernon M. Stephenson, born on January 5, 1944, in Virginia, passed away on February 18, 2026, at the age of 82. A resident of Sandston, Virginia, Vernon was a cherished member of his community and a lifelong member of Sandston Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Evelyn Stephenson. Vernon was a graduate of Highland Springs High School, where he played football, and he continued his athletic career at Chowan College.
Vernon's professional journey began as a brick mason before he transitioned to a role as a police officer with the Henrico County Police. However, most of his career was dedicated to serving as a firefighter with the City of Richmond, where he eventually retired.
He enjoyed spending his leisure time boating, water skiing, and cruising along the James River and Chickahominy River, as well as going on trail rides. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Vernon was involved with the FISH Organization and the Brotherhood at Sandston Baptist Church.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pat Stephenson; his daughter, Christy Schrader, and her husband, Chad; step-sons, Robert Snellings and Joseph Snellings; grandchildren, Katie Paige and her husband, Bryce, Karlie Schrader, Clay Snellings, and Tyler Snellings and his wife, Mikayla; and great-grandson, Bowen Paige. He is also survived by his sister, Faye Gosney, and her husband, George; nephews, Grayson Gosney and Jonathan Gosney and his wife, Katie; great-niece, Evie Gosney; and great-nephew, Caleb Gosney.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all of his caregivers over the past year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandston Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held at Sandston Baptist Church, located at 100 W. Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, VA 23150, on February 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
