He was a dedicated, loving husband and father, survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Cathy (nee Waymouth), children Leah Spehar (Robert) and Adam Weitner (Ginny), granddaughters Kiara and Mackensie Spehar, sisters Irene Whitten and Anita Young (Donald), and his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He is predeceased by his parents Joe and Margaret Weitner.
John attained a degree in accounting at University of Toronto, working in security when not in school to pay his tuition. He came from humble beginnings, with his parents having immigrated to Canada only years before his birth, and he carried the same incredible work ethic as his father.
John was a true leader, with a strong entrepreneurial drive, and the need to always be his own boss. He called the shots right until his final moment with us.
He was the founder of several businesses, and a major driving force behind the creation of the Crystal Ridge Dream Center, which he helped to co-found along with his wife Cathy, Kathy Sloggett, Annaliese Vetere, and Gina Middagh. He had an incredibly generous heart and wanted to share his success with everyone around him, which gave him immense joy. The impact he had on his family, friends and those around him, through his wisdom and generosity, is legacy that will carry on and something he was very proud of.
He was a family man, and was in many ways the glue that kept the family together, even keeping connected to family far away in Germany, as family was really important to him.
He had a huge passion for all music across many genres and was an avid concert-goer, attending hundreds of live concerts, a passion he shared with his wife, children, and friends.
John had a distinct, sharp sense of humour and knew how to make us laugh, even when we were crying. He had a smile that lit up the room, and although he didn't always say much, he always made sure to make it count when he did speak. He will be remembered very fondly for the impact he had on everyone he knew.
