Rita Joan Thomson passed away peacefully February 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Rita loved her family above all. She is predeceased by her devoted husband Ken and her daughter-in-law Connie. Rita is survived by her children Ken (Cindy), Wayne (Nancy), and Kathy (Peter), her grandchildren Adrienne (Tim), Emily (Adam), Brittany (Tomas), Michael (Mallory), and Kenny, her great-grandchildren Connor, Ian, Lucy, Jacob, and Elliot, and her dear brother Gary and sister-in-law Kathy, all of whom she loved with her whole heart.
Rita was dedicated teacher for nearly three decades with the District School Board of Niagara. Former students have shared stories about how she believed in them when no one else did. She was known as a strict but fair teacher. Deeply kind, caring, and committed to helping every child succeed.
Beyond the classroom, she was a talented artist, an enthusiastic gardener, and a wonderful cook. Family and friends will remember her delicious desserts and specialty birthday cakes, each one a reflection of her generosity and love.
Rita knew how to enjoy life. She and Ken spent many winters in Florida, where she delighted in the warmth of the sun, relaxing on the beach or by the pool with a good book, and reconnecting with dear friends from both side of the border.
She was a truly hands-on grandma, spending countless happy hours with her grandchildren at the beach, in their backyard pool, at the library, and in the kitchen making memories and sweet treats.
The later years of her life were shaped by dementia, a difficult and heartbreaking journey that never diminished her beauty or the love that surrounded her. There were many challenges, but just as many sweet, funny days that filled our hearts. These moments shined a beautiful light on Rita’s strength as she navigated this devastating disease as a true warrior.
Our family would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at Linhaven. There are angels among us. Thank you.
If you wish to honour Rita, please consider a donation in her name to The Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.
A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. Williams Funeral Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
