Betty Gene Heitman (née Maples), age 90, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, in Rochester, Michigan. Born on January 21, 1935, in Buchanan, Virginia, Betty’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with faith, intellect, and an enduring appreciation for the beauty of the world around her.
A scholar at heart, Betty earned degrees from Pikeville College and Wayne State University. Her pursuit of knowledge was not only personal but profound—recognized nationally with an award for the highest scholastic achievement in the country. This passion for learning shaped a career that spanned pharmacy, chemistry education, and medical records management. In each role, she brought precision and care that left a meaningful imprint on those she served.
Outside her professional life, Betty found joy in nurturing both garden beds and family ties. She sewed with loving hands and skill and sailed with an adventurous spirit. Tennis courts and golf greens also echoed with her presence through the years.
Her deep Christian faith anchored her days. A devoted member of the Methodist church, Betty’s relationship with God and Jesus Christ was central to her life—guiding her steps and offering strength to those around her.
At the heart of it all were her two sons, Bill Heitman and Jamie Heitman, whose lives were touched daily by her unwavering love. Her four grandchildren brought her immense pride and joy as she watched them embark on their own higher education. She shared a lifelong bond with her sister Joy Wolford-Maples that endured across decades. [Betty spent many years living with her nieces Kathy, Deanna and Joy.]
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved parents Essie and Ernest Maples; brothers Joe Maples, Darius Maples, and Ernie Maples; and sister Margaret Hatfield.
