Don was born to Chester and Virginia Platter, on June 5, 1948, in Detroit Michigan. After high school, Don attended Eastern Michigan University, where he received his bachelor's degree, and then went on to attend Columbia University, where he obtained his master's in musical conducting. Prior to attending Columbia, Don enlisted in the United States Army, and served 3 years as a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point.
Don met the love of his life, Kyle, when he asked her to dance one night, and right away knew that she was the one for him. The two were married in October of 1972, and spent almost 53 amazing years together.
Don had a passion for music and incorporated it into every aspect of his life. He worked at Warren Consolidated Schools as a band director, and was a professor of music at Rochester University, as well as Wayne State University, all the while maintaining a private studio, where he taught clarinet, saxophone, and flute.
Throughout his career Don was a member of numerous ensembles including the Detroit Concert Band where he performed under the direction of Leonard Smith, as well as the Warren Concert Band, Birmingham Concert Band and Rochester Symphony, to name a few.
Don is survived by his loving wife Kyle Platter, their son Greg Platter (Cat Dacpano), and his sister Dorothy Ayers.
A memorial service for Don will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on Don's behalf to the Michigan Music Education Association at https://mmeamichigan.org/
