

Dorene Janet "Jan" Alverson, 82, beloved wife of Richard "Rich" Alverson for 59 years passed away on October 1st. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and loyal friend to many, her enthusiasm and upbeat attitude had a positive impact on all those who knew her. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Dorothea and Enar "Bill" Runstrom. She graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School and Eastern Michigan University and later added Master’s and Education Specialist degrees from Wayne State and Oakland University. Early in her career she was an elementary teacher and later became a faculty member at Eastern Michigan University where she supervised student teachers.
Jan was a strong advocate for women's causes and was very active in the Rochester branch of AAUW and the Meadowbrook Women's Club. She loved to travel including going on more than 15 cruises. She also loved to play Bridge and participated in many Bridge groups. She was a longtime, active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and Pre-School classes and participating in an adult Sunday School group.
Jan is survived by her husband, Rich; sons Kent (Kimberly) and Todd (Hasel); brother, Larry; 3 granddaughters, Claire, Paige, and Brooke; and numerous cousins.
Visitation is 4-8 pm on Monday, October 20th at Pixley Funeral Home in Rochester. Jan's funeral is Tuesday, October 21st at 11 am with an additional viewing at 10 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jan’s name to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation.
