

WHITE, HARRY D. JR; age 77; of Rochester; passed away June 15, 2011 in his home. He was born June 9, 1934 to Harry D. and Dorothy White, Sr. in Annapolis, MD. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy (McCauley) White; three children, Mark (Susie) White of Charlottesville, VA, Stacy (Scot) Cleaveland of Troy, MI, and Cindy Keepers of Roswell, GA; and eight grandchildren: Katie and Skye White; Lee, Henry, Grant and Wyatt Cleaveland, and Zach and Holly Keepers. Harry was preceded in death by his brother, Marty White. Harry graduated from the University of Maryland, where he was a leader in student government, Men’s Glee Club, AFROTC, Pershing Rifles, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa. Upon graduation, he joined the US Air Force, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. Over the course of thirty years, Harry held many management positions in many states within AT&T and the Bell System, retiring as a Division Manager with Ameritech in 1990. After retirement he taught Engineering Management as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Detroit-Mercy until this past year. A devoted family man, Harry was an enthusiastic supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, especially those related to the musical and theatrical arts. He himself was both a member and performer with Avon Players, Heart of the Hills Players, Heart of the Hills Barbershop Chorus and Meadow Brook Theatre. Harry was a Christian gentleman in every sense of the words and a faithful member of University Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and sang in the choir. For many years, Harry and his wife, Nancy, were inspirational leaders at the local and national levels for Presbyterian Mariners, a family-oriented adult fellowship organization. They served as National Skippers in 1980-81. Harry leaves behind a life-long legacy of civic engagement and community service. He was especially active in the Kiwanis Club and held numerous offices during his 35+ years of service, including Governor of the Michigan District in 1996-97. For many years thereafter he worked for Kiwanis International as a regional representative helping to build new clubs. Visitation Saturday, June 25th, 6-8 PM and Sunday, June 26th, 2-6 PM at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Drive, Rochester; Funeral service Monday, June 27th at 2:00 PM at University Presbyterian Church, 1385 South Adams Road, Rochester, with the Reverend Lloyd Buss and Reverend Marianne Grano officiating; burial will be in Salem Reformed Church Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
