John is survived by his loving wife Mary; Sara (James) Uh whom he loved like a daughter since she was 8, and Joshua and Henry, his grandchildren.
John was born in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Louis and Bertha (Chont) Szakacs. He graduated high school in Pennsylvania and served in Vietnam as a Special Forces paratrooper ahead of the official war. John learned drafting and became a toolmaker for Plastech for most of his career. John and Mary later owned and operated an Alinosi's ice cream parlor and chocolate shop in Grosse Pointe called Sara’s Sweets.
John loved woodworking, model building, gardening, and cooking Hungarian food. He was known for his grizzly bear exterior with the heart of a teddy bear.
John’s family will hold a virtual service on Saturday April 11th at 2pm. Please email [email protected] for details.
