Nate Mark Fleer suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on March 12th. Nate was the son of David and Mae Fleer and brother to Josh & Megan and Luke & Marianne. He leaves behind his adoring nephews Levi, Lyle and Leo and niece, Amaya. He was a source of irreplaceable joy to his family and close friends, including Dylan, Aaron and Rae Garmeny.
Nate was 25 years old and a resident of Rochester, Michigan. He was very bright having attended the Honors College at Oakland University. In high school he was active in theatre, with lead and supporting roles in Lend Me a Tenor, the Outsiders and Little Shop of Horrors. His performing included two years as Rochester High’s Freddie the Falcon and continued in college as the Oakland University mascot, the Grizz. Nate had an academic interest in philosophy, a passion for politics having attended a Bernie Sanders rally just days prior to his death. He also had a heart for those in need, willing to give generously to their wellbeing.
Nate was a brilliant, imaginative person who was brimming with humor and never failed to infect those around him with his familiar smile and gargantuan laugh. More importantly to his family and most intimate friends, Nate provided a certain depth of thought and kind-heartedness with his pastoral presence which, for them, made all the difference in the world.
One friend said, “Nate was the kindest, most gentle person and biggest personality I’ve had the privilege of knowing.”
One of his professors recently wrote that she remembered Nate’s “fire and passion for politics, the debates and scathing arguments. I never forget the students with the fire inside.” He was a “force.”
A fellow thespian said, “We first met when I was a freshman at Rochester High, and I couldn’t have asked for a better Senior Buddy. He was warm, inviting, funny, and a joy to be around. He introduced me to the Theatre. We didn’t know it at the time, but his initial push for me to go to the first R.A.T.S meeting started a chain reaction, leading all the way to now . . . where I’ve chosen acting as my life career. I’ll always be thankful for the support, heart, and care that he had for others. When I walk back onstage, I’ll be playing for Nate.”
Nate was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend and will be deeply missed and forever loved.
