

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy Smith and Robert E. Smith, and by his brother, David Smith. He is survived by his beloved children, Andrea Smith, Robert (Ciara) Smith, and Aaron Smith, granddaughter, Ellie Smith, and his sister, Alice Smith.
A gifted and passionate musician, Bruce found joy in singing, playing piano/keys, and composing music. He sang in several choirs throughout his life, including the Columbus Boychoir, and was well known in the Rochester music scene as the keyboardist for Rochester-based Backstreet band.
Bruce was also a master craftsman and skilled woodworker. He renovated countless homes throughout the Rochester, New York area, leaving behind tangible reminders of his dedication, precision, and the pride he took in his work. Among his most meaningful contributions was his significant role in the renovation of the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence.
Bruce had a special fondness for wildlife, animals and birds. Over the years, he cared for many species of animals including cockatiels, Quaker parrots, ferrets, hamsters, chipmunks, fish, lizards and dogs. He also loved camping and the outdoors, especially spending time at Godfrey’s Pond, a fish and wildlife preserve in Batavia that he enjoyed sharing with his family.
Bruce was known for his love of storytelling and his ability to make people laugh. His warmth, wit, and humor drew people in. He was also an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills. In the kitchen, Bruce was a talented and enthusiastic chef who enjoyed cooking for others.
Bruce will be remembered as a creative soul, a loving father and a skilled craftsman. He brought music, laughter, and light into the lives of those around him
Calling hours will be held at Alvah Halloran & Son Funeral Home, located at 2125 Chili Ave, Rochester, New York, 14624, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow, starting at 7:00 pm. Attendees are invited to dress casually, as that would be in accordance with Bruce's wishes.
