James A. Harter, 83, devoted husband, father and grandfather, of Saint Charles, IL, died of several illnesses on February 23, 2024 in a group home in Mesa, Arizona. Born in Rockford, IL, the youngest son of Arthur Glen Harter and Dorothy (Doubler) Harter. He attended Welsh Grade School, Roosevelt Junior High and graduated from West High School and went on to attend Elgin Community College. He served in the United States Army in the White House under President Kennedy and other government communications. James served for 15 years with the UMC of Geneva, IL, and was responsible for getting the construction secured for the new church. He served for 15 years with the Boy Scouts, St. Charles Troop 1. James retired from Pitney Bowes as a service technician. He was married to Roberta Tunks-Harter for almost 60 years. James had 2 sons, Paul A. (Diane Kufeldt-Harter) Harter and their children, Andrew and Luke Harter and Alan J. Harter and mother of his child, Amy McPartland and their daughter, Ariel Harter. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Philip Harter and Robert Keith Harter.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Advantage Funeral Home, 7000 W. State St, Rockford, IL 61102. Burial at Willwood Burial Park.
