He graduated from Wicomico High School in 1955 and credits being a member of the football team and his mother’s determination for the motivation behind his graduation. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1961, which included a volunteer assignment to the South Pole. During his Navy time, he served in a construction battalion, otherwise referred to as “CB or Seabees.” After the Navy, Richard was devoted to farming, being a poultry grower and a Wicomico County Bus Contractor. He was a founding member of the Powellville Volunteer Fire Company serving in many capacities including Treasurer and Oyster Fritter Fryer. He was an honorary member of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and a Saltwater Cowboy. He was a Past Master of Wicomico Lodge No. 91 AF & AM and held membership in the Wicomico County Bus Contractors Association, Farm Bureau and the Powellville Ruritan.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Kelly Myrer and husband Scotty, and Denise Downs and her husband Jimmy; grandchildren, Shannon Bradshaw, Meredith Myrer, Wesley Myrer, Robbie Downs and his wife Kelsey, and Wyatt Downs. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, a sister, Jeannie Chase, several nieces and nephews, and a special companion, Elaine Parker and her family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Lewis.
A graveside service is scheduled for April 16, 2022, at 1:00pm at Dennis Family Cemetery in Powellville.(4132 Powellville Road, Pittsville, MD 21850). Fellowship to follow the service at the Powellville Volunteer Fire Department. In honor of Richard, the family welcomes casual attire.
