Connie Bernard was a gentle, nurturing soul and anyone who knew her considered themselves lucky to share her space. Always the social butterfly, Connie could carry a conversation with anyone. Grandma used to say she “could talk the horns off a billy goat”. Connie put her conversation skills to good use for over 30 years as a telephone operator for Southwest Bell (AT&T) right out of high school in 1963. Once she retired from there, she decided she couldn’t stay at home for long and began a second career with QVC as an operator. She loved to take orders and make friends along the way. While Connie loved to go to work and share people’s stories, ultimately, she loved her family most. Cliff (nephew) once shared a story that when he was younger, his mom couldn’t afford a car-but Connie had one. So, Connie would generously let her sister drive the car around with her children and Connie would ride the bus to and from work. She would invest her time and affection on those she loved by baking with them, telling stories, and watching all the best tv shows together. She was a calming force in sometimes stormy situations. She was a peacemaker who genuinely pursued the good in everyone. Her knack for communicating and love for her family kept us connected. In many ways, she was the tie that held us all together. She passed away February 19, 2025 surrounded by people she loved. Connie’s gentle spirit and contagious smile will be so very dearly missed.
Connie is survived by her brother, Thomas Bernard Jr. and his wife Terry Bernard and their 6 children and her nephew Chris Hughes and wife Shannon Hughes and niece Christina Hughes Layh and husband Jason Layh and sister Mary Jane Hughes. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Bernard and Myrtle Bernard, and beloved nephew Clifton Thomas Hughes Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 @ 2:00 PM at San Jose Burial Park, 8235 Mission Rd, San Antonio, TX 78214.
