Consuelo Mejia Diaz, our dearest mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and trusted friend went to be with the Lord on January 11, 2024. Consuelo, 100 years old, was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 2, 1923, and passed away peacefully surrounded by her eight children at her home.
Consuelo’s values were instilled in her at an early age where she and her five siblings worked on a farm to help them harvest the seasonal crops for a German family in Thorndale, TX. The generous family offered her family a casita at the farm, where she spent her adolescence and even learned to communicate in German. She attended school and graduated from Thorndale High School in 1939. In 1940, the family moved back to San Antonio and Consuelo quickly recognized the need to help support her family. Between 1943 – 1946 she held various roles as a civil servant at the Kelly Air Force Base.
In 1952, Consuelo graduated from the Texas School of Nursing and began her nursing career at Santa Rosa Hospital caring for infants. Although Consuelo eventually raised eight beautiful children, she quickly realized she did not want to focus her career on caring for infants. Ultimately, Consuelo worked at St. Francis Nursing Home (formerly known as Laurelwood Nursing Home) where she passionately cared for the elderly for 42 years until she retired at the age of 85. Consuelo was devoted to her family and worked endlessly to provide her children with a Catholic education. Consuelo loved her family dearly. She will truly be missed, and her legacy will carry on forever in our hearts.
Consuelo is preceded in death by her beloved husband Porfirio Diaz of 50 years. Her parents Pedro Mejia and Cecilia Rosales Mejia, her sisters Concha Thomas, Auroa “Audry” Lopez, Rachel Valenzuela, and brothers Carlos Mejia, Salvador Mejia, Juan Mejia, Rodolfo Mejia, Raul Mejia, her infant son Porfirio Diaz, and her grand-son Joseph Gracia Jr. She is survived by her sister Beatrice “Bea” Longoria, brother Gilbert Mejia (Margaret “Cookie”) and numerous nieces and nephews. Her children Consuelo “Connie” Balli (Ramiro), Eloise Perez (Oscar), Alma Diaz, Elsa D. Mata (Roy), Linda Tejeda, Rene Diaz (Marcie), Hector Diaz (Sandra) and Hilda Balli (Cesar).
Consuelo will be missed by her fifty-four grandchildren: twenty-three grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
The family would like to give special recognition to Nancy Lopez, Consuelo’s healthcare provider for the past three years and to Norma and Desiree at Magnolia Hospice. Lastly, a huge thank you to Linda Tejeda, her daughter, who guided the family as they cared for their mom and Marlene Tejeda who cared for her grandmother nightly during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, your support to the SA Alzheimer's Association and Christ the King Church is greatly appreciated
